WELLINGTON FOLK // WELLINGTONIAN OF THE YEAR 2017
The Wellingtonian of the Year Awards are a Dominion Post project. Started in 1989 they celebrate achievements and contributions across all sectors of the Greater Wellington community, awarding those who make the greater Wellington region the exciting and vibrant city it is – "the coolest little capital in the world"
Now endearingly known as The Wellys, the awards night celebrates these people across nine categories, with one overall winner recognised as the supreme Wellingtonian of the Year winner.
RETRO FOLK // THE POWDER ROOM
The Powder Room is a retro-tastic sanctuary for your hair and your soul. Owner and head stylist, Lisa, came to us with a need for photos to show off the salon, and team, for print media and social media.
Kaibosh Food Rescue: Zero Food Poverty, Zero Food Waste is New Zealand’s first and most well-established food rescue organisation.
Kaibosh delivers 10,000kg of quality surplus food each month to community groups that support people in need. This is the equivalent of 28,500 meals, as well as a 7,785kg reduction in carbon emissions – that’s huge!
So when Kaibosh were in need to fresh new imagery for their corporate communications I jumped at the chance to help out such a great community organisation.
Check out more of how they help our community, and how you can help them at kaibosh.org.nz

MUSIC FOLK // RICHTER CITY REBELS
Ever since my visit to New Orleans in 2013 I've been taken by the power of the second line – it's the music that makes you move! So being approached by Wellington's own 9-piece second line band to shoot a tableau for their new album, 'We Do It Like That', was a treat!
Setting up a panoramic-style shoot in a bar with nine musicians at 9am on a Sunday morning (you try coordinating musician's schedules!) was surprisingly smooth – thanks to the professionalism of the Rebels.
With old, rare machines that make monotype and linotype flexing their engineering awesomeness, old presses pushing ink to paper, and rows and rows of type to oh-and-ah over!
The volunteers that run this museum are the real stars, keeping these machines running and introducing the art to new generations.
THEATRE FOLK // CUBA CREATIVE
Strange Resting Places is set in Italy, 1944: a battle torn-theatre of the Second World War. The allied onslaught stalls at Monte Cassino and the 28th Maori Battalion find themselves centre stage. A young Maori soldier goes out to steal food; an Italian takes cover in a stable. Both find themselves trapped in a potentially deadly stand-off, but with Germans just outside, their survival depends on co-operation.
It combines live music with drama, comedy and performed in Maori, Italian and English, Strange Resting Places shines a light on the complex emotional bonds of New Zealand’s wartime history and the three universals that Maori shared with the Italians: whanau (family), kai (food) and waiata (song) – not to mention wily cunning, a love of vino and a passion for the ladies. Strange Resting Places is theatre crafted from extensive research, contemporary storytelling and personal experience.
Working with these talented actors and the awesome people from Cuba Creative was a lot of fun!
